Inaugural meeting of Arab Women Network in CBRN Security, December 2024

In December 2024, the network was officially launched, and the inaugural meeting was held in Cyprus, which was hosted by the CYCLOPS Training Center in Cyprus, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration and other international partners.

The agenda of this meeting was carefully crafted to meet the needs of the region and to focus on the initial administrative development. The purpose of this network is to complement the efforts being done by other global networks and international organizations, i.e., the International Atomic Energy Agency.

This gathering brought together 19 regional participants, as well as representatives from the IAEA, LANL, CNS, KCL, and other institutions. The agenda reflected the diversity of technical expertise and experiences of women across the region, while setting the foundation for a professional community committed to collaboration and capacity-building.

Panel discussions were organized on workforce development and regional cooperation in CBRN security. To share the best practices from other regional networks, the leadership of Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network (BSWN) and Women in Nuclear in Central Asia (WINCA) were also invited, and sessions were held on knowledge exchanges to make this network an inclusive place for experienced, mid-career, and early-career women.

To discuss the network’s vision, structure, and future activities, breakout sessions were organized, and the network’s name and leadership team were finalized to lead the network’s mission, which is to unite, connect, support, and empower women experts working in CBRN-related fields.

The highlight of the meeting was an open dialogue titled “By Women, About Women,” around professional challenges, personal resilience, and institutional support mechanisms.

Participants’ feedback highlighted the meeting’s significance as a community-building effort that many saw as long overdue in the region.
